Design Manager – Sri Lanka – £85,000 plus unique benefits package.

The client needs this person to be a key conduit between the business in the UK and the design business over in Sri Lanka. As such, the ideal candidate would be relocating from the UK to Sri Lanka. This role is not necessarily a “hands-on” design role, more of a leadership and management role, with involvement in assurance, development, and guidance of the team etc. This is a new position due to expansion of the business.

The design business in SL works on the design, engineering, manufacture of Protection & Control equipment for substation projects.

Salary up to £85k for this role. Plus:

10% bonus

“Location allowance” – 25% of salary

Free flights to/from UK – 3 per year if single person, 1 per year if travelling with family

Private healthcare – for employee and family

Car and driver provided whilst living in SL

UK pension package – 7% employer contributions

School fees covered

Relocation support – company will organise container to assist with initial move

Temporary accommodation organised for first 30 days. Client would then cover the cost of longer-term rental.

As you can see, the relocation package means the role would be a great opportunity for a person with a young family, who would be open to international relocation and looking for somewhere to settle in the long term.

Role purpose: This is a pivotal leadership position within the Management Team, accountable for strategy, direction, and oversight of design and engineering activities. The role ensures that project designs are robust, compliant, and optimised, while fostering a collaborative culture of shared learning, best practice, and technical excellence. It requires strong leadership to align design outputs with business objectives, promote effective stakeholder engagement, and empower teams to deliver successful outcomes.

Key Accountabilities: • Strategic Direction: Define and lead the strategic approach for Design & Engineering in line with company standards, client requirements, and business objectives. • Team Leadership & Development: Build and develop high-performing teams, ensuring appropriate resourcing, capability growth, and succession planning while working closely with wider PTD design teams across UK and EDC locations. • Performance & Productivity: Drive high-quality, timely, and efficient delivery of engineering and design outputs. • Commercial Ownership: Accountable for financial performance, including profit and loss, estimating inputs, and cost-effective delivery across projects.

Skills & Experience Required: This role requires a highly capable engineering professional with proven experience in delivering design services throughout the full project lifecycle — from early-stage design development through to construction delivery.

The successful candidate will be adept at integrating design strategy into construction practice, ensuring technical excellence, safety, and efficiency. Technical & Professional Qualifications • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical or Power Engineering disciplines. • Ideally a Chartered Engineer or actively working towards corporate membership of a recognised engineering institution. • Strong background in Control & Protection Engineering, with specific experience in delivering IEC 61850-compliant Protection and Control Systems. • Sound knowledge of BIM processes and tools, with practical experience implementing them in a design environment. • Solid technical foundation in engineering delivery, with experience in a relevant discipline (preferred but not essential). Leadership & Delivery Experience • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate design teams within a matrix organisation, delivering engineering outputs that are aligned with both customer requirements and business objectives. • Proven success in managing the delivery of complex design programs — on time, on budget, safely, and to the highest quality standards. • Ability to implement strategic design approaches effectively at the construction stage.
