Position: Shift Engineer (Electrical Bias)
Location: Slough
Shift Pattern: Continental shift pattern (4 on, 4 off; days and nights)
Role Overview
As a Shift Engineer with an electrical focus, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of critical electrical systems within a high-performing data centre. You will conduct planned preventative maintenance (PPM), troubleshoot electrical faults, and perform essential repairs on key systems to maintain operational uptime. This is a hands-on role that requires attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
This position is an excellent fit for candidates with a military engineering background who have worked with electrical and mechanical systems in mission-critical environments.
Responsibilities
Electrical Maintenance and Repairs: Conduct routine checks, preventative maintenance, and reactive repairs on electrical systems, including power distribution units, UPS systems, and emergency lighting.
Systems Monitoring: Monitor the performance of electrical systems and report any issues that could affect data centre operations.
Equipment Troubleshooting: Quickly diagnose and resolve faults on electrical systems, collaborating with other team members as needed to maintain uptime.
Documentation and Compliance: Maintain detailed shift logs and ensure compliance with Health and Safety protocols, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
Team Support: Work alongside mechanical and control systems team members to ensure full facility coverage and provide mutual support when required.
Incident Response: Act as a first responder to technical issues during shifts, coordinating with other engineers and contractors to restore functionality.
Ideal Candidate Profile
This role suits ex-forces personnel experienced in electrical maintenance and fault finding within high-pressure environments.
Preferred Backgrounds Include:
Royal Navy: Marine Electrical Technicians or Electrical Artificers familiar with maintaining and troubleshooting electrical systems on ships or submarines.
British Army: REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) Electricians or Electrical Technicians who have worked on generators, lighting, or other electrical systems.
Royal Air Force (RAF): Electrical Engineers or Electricians with experience in maintaining flight line power equipment, emergency lighting, or HVAC electrical components.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Electrical Expertise: Strong knowledge of electrical systems maintenance, including experience with UPS, generators, and power distribution.
Technical Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly diagnose and resolve electrical issues in a high-stakes environment.
Safety-First Approach: Familiarity with Health and Safety standards and a track record of adhering to safe work practices.
