Position: Shift Lead (M&E)
Location: Slough
Shift Pattern: Continental shift pattern (4 on, 4 off; days and nights)
Role Overview
As a Shift Lead in a high-performing data centre, you’ll play a key role in managing the technical environment to ensure the continuous and reliable operation of critical electrical and mechanical systems. You will oversee planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive repairs, focusing on both Low Voltage (LV) and High Voltage (HV) equipment. Working as part of a small, specialized shift team, you will coordinate daily operations, prioritise workload, and ensure adherence to strict safety protocols and operational standards.
This role is ideal for someone with a military engineering background who is accustomed to high-pressure situations and understands the importance of rigorous maintenance and system reliability.
Responsibilities
Lead Shift Operations: Supervise a small technical team during shifts, ensuring all mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems operate effectively and safely.
Maintenance and Repairs: Oversee routine maintenance schedules and carry out emergency repairs on systems, including LV and HV switchgear, power distribution units, UPS systems, cooling systems, and fire protection.
Compliance and Safety: Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations and follow strict protocols for electrical safety, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and emergency response.
Coordination with Teams: Liaise with other shift teams, contractors, and senior management to ensure continuity of operations and swift resolution of any issues.
Reporting and Documentation: Document activities in shift logs, report incidents promptly, and ensure all paperwork is accurate and complete.
Training and Development: Support the training of new team members and facilitate skills development within the shift team.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We’re looking for candidates with a hands-on background in military engineering, ideally those who have worked with electrical, mechanical, or HVAC/R systems in critical or high-stakes environments.
Preferred Backgrounds Include:
Royal Navy: Marine Engineering Technicians, Electrical Artificers, or Electrical and Mechanical Technicians who have maintained complex systems on ships or submarines.
British Army: Royal Engineers, REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) Technicians, or Electrical and Mechanical Technicians who have worked with power generation, distribution, or HVAC systems.
Royal Air Force (RAF): Electrical or Mechanical Technicians with experience in maintaining critical infrastructure, flight line equipment, or air conditioning units.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Experience with LV/HV: Understanding of Low and High Voltage systems and previous experience with fault finding and maintenance.
Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of critical systems such as UPS, generators, BMS, cooling systems, and fire suppression.
Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot technical faults quickly and efficiently.
Safety-Focused Mindset: Demonstrated ability to work under strict safety guidelines, ideally with formal training in Health and Safety standards.
Communication and Leadership: Strong communication skills to lead shift teams and coordinate with other departments and stakeholders.
